Ron Wyden \n(D-Ore.) and Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Portland) and Greg Walden (R-Hood \nRiver) have proposed a bill to end alcohol taxes on kombucha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill is titled the Keeping our Manufacturers from Being Unfairly \nTaxed while Championing Health Act, or KOMBUCHA. Wyden also introduced \nthe same act two years ago, but it never came to a vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kombucha, a fermented tea product, and is currently taxed like an \nalcoholic beverage because of trace amounts of alcohol \u2013 around 0.5 \npercent by volume. Wyden, Walden and Blumenauer maintain the amount is \nnegligible, and that eliminating the tax would allow the market to grow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKombucha is one the fastest growing beverage industries in the \nworld, with an expected economic impact of $1.2 billion by 2020,\u201d \nBlumenauer says in a statement. \u201cThis legislation is a common sense \nsolution that would lift unnecessary tax burdens and instead support \nemerging small businesses in Oregon and across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If passed, the kombucha act would increase the allowable amount of \nalcohol present in the drink from 0.5 percent to 1.25 percent by-volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walden issued a statement saying, \u201cI\u2019ve met with kombucha \nmanufacturers in Oregon who have told me how this outdated tax is \nholding back their industry,\u201d he says. \u201cThis bill will help these small \nbusinesses keep more of their hard earned money to reinvest in their \nbusinesses and create jobs in our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Sen.
