It\n has been a little over three months since the food carts in Corvallis \nmoved from First Street to the parking lot on Fourth Street, between \nWestern and Washington, due to new regulations passed by the Corvallis \nCity Council. We followed up with two of the food cart owners to see how\n the move is affecting their businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave Kell, owner of \nKell\u2019s Kitchen, had a positive view of the move. Kell explained that \nHugh White had purchased the new property on 4th Street and installed \nelectrical outlets, as per the city\u2019s requirement. The new lot is also \npaved, as opposed to the gravel lot location on First; accessibility for\n disabled people was a major issue that the City Council took up with \nthe First Street food pod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kell described what the \nmove has done for his business: \u201cThis has worked out better. The \nvisibility has been awesome with the traffic that goes by, it\u2019s \nnonstop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kell said that while the move was an annoyance, things have worked out for them in the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe fell on our feet,\u201d said Kell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move hasn\u2019t worked out as well for other food carts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like it, I\u2019m \nplaced in the back, especially at night. No one can see me,\u201d said a \nrepresentative from Happy Shawarma food cart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The representative from \nthe shawarma cart explained that they have bad visibility due to their \nplacement in the back of the lot, and that they have received a lot of \ncomplaints from the residents of the housing about noise and parking \nspots. The Happy Shawarma cart has tried to address these complaints by \npainting parking posts in the lot, and by asking their customers not to \npark in the residents\u2019 spots. They also said that their business is open\n at night, and they can\u2019t help the noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shawarma rep thinks \nbusiness could be much better. They explained that they have had \ncustomers call them and express difficulty in finding the cart, despite \nthe address being online. They feel that they should have been given \nmore time to find a new home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cWe\n are a business, even though we are a movable food cart, just like any \nother restaurant or store front. In my opinion, they should have given \nus a year to find another location,\u201d said the representative from Happy \nShawarma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next time you find \nyourself chasing down lunch on Fourth Street, be sure to have a look \naround and surveil all of your options; our taste buds have yet to be \ndisappointed by any of these carts. Also, be mindful of where you park!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
